Just click that link to see pictures of crap from Europe. Among my favorite pictures (besides the ones highlighted for each city, are: me in front of the gates of hell, and heaven, Alfa Romeo cop cars in Italy, "Emily Rules" graffiti in Florence, Dasha outside the hustler club, the Louvre by night, Michelle excited about buttresses, me in front of the Duomo, overlooking Grenoble from the bastille, Dasha and Michelle touring the bastille, Michelle napping on the Trevi, the forum, the pope... watching acrobatics, me, very tired, fancy stairs in the vatican museum, me with pigeons in Venice, the bridge of sighs, Michelle, about to be eaten, proof that I was in Munich, Michelle with our giant snowball in Berlin, Yertle-homage modern art, Bebelplatz, me leaving the Hanfmuseum, Michelle loves Heinecken, and I do too.

There's a line in Othello about a drinker. Now a reasonable man, by and by a beast, presently a fool. The pretty much covers it.

Going Back to Cali No Comments | cody.log / Europe

Around this time tomorrow, I'll be on a train to the airport, and soon after will be on a series of planes that will take me back to LA. Alas, my trip is over.

Even though we were only in Amsterdam for a day and a half, we got to see the Sex Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and everyone's favorite... the Heineken museum. The guy at the bar was so happy to see me turn my "Guinness for Strength" shirt inside out, he gave me a (nother) free beer. After that, we got to play foosball on a table in the brewery.

[sniff] I love the Dutch.

I smoke two joints in the morning
I smoke two joint at night
I smoke two joint in the afternoon
It makes me feel alright

I smoke two joints in time of peace
And two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints
And then I smoke two more

Daddy he once told me,
"Son, you be hard workin' man."
And momma she once told me,
"Son, you do the best you can."
Then one day I meet a man,
He came to me and said yes.
"Hard work good and hard work fine,
but first take care of head."

Flying Pig in Amsterdam is a great hostel. I highly recommend it. Sorry to everyone that's pissed that I haven't called. Don't worry, you should get your postcards in... like... three weeks.

Huh, huh... huh huh. I just got back from the Hanfmuseum. Which roughly (well, exactly) translates to "Hemp Museum". After looking at various exhibits in German, and giggling wildly, we went downstairs for some hemp tea. Huh, huh huh. It was great.

Just today we finished seeing everything we wanted in Berlin, so now I'm totally ready to go. Especially since I'm totally ready to be back in an English speaking country (Holland).

Survived Munich No Comments | cody.log / Europe

Well, it warmed up, and Michelle's hands grew back. So, eventually, we left Munich... intact. Not before seeing lots of cool stuff, including three original Van Goghs, including one of his two famous sunflower paints, along with lots of other cool stuff that you wouldn't even know about anyway, unless you're Dasha or Ed or Michelle... or possibly Josh, or something.

It's true what they say, that more people speak English in Berlin. Unfortunately, not a single person in this whole entire huge hostile we're staying in is a native English speaker. Which means, not only are conversations limited to very basic things, like what time it is, but also that they don't understand any American humor at all. None. Whatsoever.

I've lost my mojo.

I'm still being good, mind you, but I couldn't be bad, anyway. So that's not saying much.

We went to Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, today, which was a famous border crossing building when there were two Berlins. It's packed with actual devices (not replicas) of crazy devices used to get over, under and through the Berlin Wall. One guy crafted a small submarine to pull him through the water to get across, and was immediately hired to create a commercial version when he reached Capitalism... I mean, "freedom".

Also, Michelle and I both nearly killed ourselves creating the biggest snowball either of us has ever made. It ended up about 45 inches in diameter after we pushed it from near Potsdammerplatz to Parsier Platz.

Michelle is playing pool by herself right now, which is a really sad thing to watch, so I should go. Ed, your book sucks! It has misled us many times, and left us out in the cold. I trust it not.

Ich sprescher kein Deutsch.

COLD in Munich No Comments | cody.log / Europe

2003.01.12, 12:32:00 am

Venice was cool, man, very cool. There's not one operating car in the whole city (at least, not one that actually moves around), because the streets are a maze that sometimes thin down to only two feet wide. Even the buses are boats ("Waterbuses"). And, as it is a town full of merchants, everyone was very nice. We went to, thank god, our last classical art museum of the entire trip. I have to look at one more "Madonna and Child" or one more "Annunciation", I'm going to go to CRAZY! Thankfully, we did take a trip to the more modern Guggenheim in Venice, too, where both the art, and the staff are all very beautiful.

Now a few choice Michelle quotes:

"I'm unhappy in three different ways right now, I'm cold, I'm tired, and I'm sober." --Michelle

"...but, alcohol warms the soul." --Michelle
"I thought they said that love warms the soul." --Cody
"Then that means... that alcohol is love." --Michelle

Oh, this one is good, too. The guy with the little mini-bar on the train was just starving for attention, so he walks up and down the hallway yelling... no, screaming: "Pasta, Banini, Pizza, MINIBAR!" Although it's sounds a lot funnier with the proper intonation. Ask me when I get back to Berkeley, and I'll try to say it like he did.

Maybe I didn't mention that it was very cold in Venice. It was. Cold. Very cold. Below freezing the whole time we were there. But Venice doesn't hold a candle to Munich. We got in to Munich at 6:47am on the overnight train and walked around for a little while, looking at churches, before Michelle uttered (with her last dying breath), "So... cold..."

"No, no," I said, it can't be that cold. I've been in cold before, many times, and this isn't as bad as that. But off we go to the nice, warm EasyInternet cafe and when we get there I discover it's 1°F outside (-17°C). At this point, I'm forced to concede, "It's fucking cold!" You can read Michelle's take on this whole event, too, if you want.

Sorry, Michelle.

Rainy Rome No Comments | cody.log / Europe

It's raining in Rome. It has been for days.

Right now I'm between visiting the Capuccin monks, who occupy six or eight rooms filled floor to ceiling with bones, and visiting the Forum, which Michelle promises is cool.

I visited various cool stuff in Florence, saw the Duomo, climbed the Campanile, visited the Baptistry, the Academy (with Mike's Dave) and the Uffizi, among other expensive museums. God damn, is Florence expensive, if you don't have enough time or money during your vacation to Italy, skip Florence... for me. Please. Too expensive.

Fuck, my picture server got knocked out by the power outage, and isn't coming back up. Maybe I can talk Pradeep through powering back on when he gets back to Cal, but until then you'll have to look at the the old-fashioned way. There's only a few up right now, I didn't have time to upload any more. I'll probably just wait on the rest until I get back.

Soooo Early 1 Comment | cody.log / Europe

Alright, so at this hostel, there are three computers, and during prime time, they're all in use pretty much continuously. So, in an effort to dodge the crowd, I decided to wake up very very early in the morning (it's 8:22am right now) to use the machines. However, they're already all in use. Fuck.

So, I'm going to do the best I can to get all these pictures uploaded.

Ah, Italians are funny, they like to add an "a" sound to the end of words... lots of words, even pronouns. It's not an "uhhh" either, like they're thinking, they know exactly what to say, they just can't end a word without using a vowel.

After a few days of 2003 in Paris, we hopped on the TGV (in France, TGV = nice train, any anything else = shitty train) to Grenoble. Even though the train left at like 10:30am, I had to wake up early so Dasha could "smooth couch". [Shakes fist]. The 16 hours we spent in Grenoble were nice, especially because more of them involved drinking than sleeping (by 4 to 3). And we got to ride in the little eggs [snicker] up to the Bastille, where I nearly killed myself numerous times.

Then came the day long train ride to Florence, which isn't something I understand because Florence is only like 500 miles away from Grenoble. My only memory from Switzerland, where we stopped for almost an hour, is the guy in the train station who said (as I passed by, and with a thick accent): "You look like a keeller, no? ...How many men have you keelled?". They've been nicer in Italy. Apparently I look more like James Dean here.

Also, now I have a picture of myself in front of the gates of hell, and one in front of the gates of heaven. They'll all be posted when I get to Rome, I think.

Michelle is having seizures right now. I don't know why. Really I don't. In fact, I don't even know that woman. [Walks away]
