As it turns on, Speakeasy customer service when moving is not so snappy. As a result, instead of the site being down for two days, it's been down for 41. Granted, they contract out wiring work to Covad, who are really the ones that fucked it up, but it doesn't make me feel better.

What follows is the complete order history for this order, with comments added by Speakeasy and Covad. My favorite parts are:
  • For the first week (not included int he transcript), absolutely nothing was done, since apparently the form I used to request service to my move request goes into a black hole.
  • For the next 20 days, Covad proceeds to schedule and not show up to a series of appointments

Arithmetic Tree Notation (ATN) 16 Comments | Ideas

Those of you who love Reverse Polish Notation as much as I do will really love this new fashionable notation, which is even more indulgent: Arithmetic Tree Notation. Consider, for example, a "human readable" mathematical expression:

3 + 9 x 6 / 4 - 7

Most modern compilers solve the ambiguity here by defining a sensible order of operations. RPN takes a different approach by using stack order evaluation, in effect making everything upside-down, backwards, and retarded:

3 9 6 x + 4 7 - /

True nerds enjoy this sort of obfuscation, because it helps differentiate the nerdy elite from math-ignorant commoners. But when RPN calculators were introduced into public schools, all sorts of people started learning the notation, and now it's no longer a badge of honor.

To remedy this, and to prevent this situation from claiming a perfectly obscure notation again in the future, clearly we need a notation too difficult for kids. So the most important design question in developing a new notation is: what other data structures could be used to make schoolchildren cry? The answer: a binary tree.

Arithmetic Trees are binary trees wherein branch nodes are operators and leaf nodes are operands. The tree is notated row-wise top-to-bottom and left-to-right. So a simple graph like the following:

turns into:

/ + - 3 x 4 7 9 6

Finally, a sensible but terrifying notation! Only true nerd royalty would dare to use it. Unfortunately, evaluating this expression is more computationally expensive than RPN, but that's a small price to pay for the pride that you'll feel when using the newest and hottest arithmetic notation.

We hoisted the two of the three finished counter-top pieces into place and wired the fluorescent lights under the counter. We also assembled the tubing for the carbon dioxide and beer, tapped the keg and pulled the first pints. It really felt like a historical moment.

The only tap handles we could find in time for the party were Anchor Steam, so we just got three of them. So despite what you might think, there may be no correlation between tap handle and the beer it dispenses.

The lighted countertop does prove to be as bright as we thought. So bright, in fact, that several members of the house put on sunglasses before gathering around for the first pints.

With Brandon's help, I finished wiring the LED lights in the cabinet today and loaded them up with booze. On Saturday the bar supplies arrived in the mail, including the 3-tap tower, 15 lb CO2 tank and 3-guage splitter. Things are really falling into place now.

After a few coats of polyurethane, the counter tops will be done and we can fasten them into place and wire them up. I hope to have pictures of the white glowy boxes by Wednesday.
